History

In 1998, the Council of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) established the BME Information Technology Centre, which was renamed the Public Administration’s Centre of Information Technology (BME IK) in 2009 while retaining its full profile. The aim and task of the BME IK is to initiate, organise, and coordinate cooperation between research groups and development institutions within and outside the University in externally funded (national and international tenders, market orders) research and development work. The Centre promotes and coordinates the utilisation of its knowledge base and that of other BME departments, cooperates with market players in the information economy, and transfers knowledge from the Centre and other university groups. The BME IK strives to participate in the solution of domestic IT and information technology development tasks requiring a high degree of knowledge concentration, in the dissemination of digital culture, artificial intelligence applications, and in the promotion of digital services and applications in the fields of public administration, health care and the competitiveness of domestic enterprises.

On 13 November 2018, at the professional forum held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of BME IK’s foundation, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Ministry of the Interior (BM) and the University of Technology (BME). The cooperation framework agreement between the BM and BME was confirmed on 2 October 2023, as a result of which BME will contribute to the further development of healthcare information systems.

The rapid development of information technologies and the widespread socio-economic embedding of IT applications also give the University an important role in shaping the information society. The Public Administration’s Centre of Information Technology (BME IK) – with the diverse knowledge base of BME behind it – takes on the research, development, management, and innovation tasks, the solution of which can contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy on the world market and improving the efficiency of the operation of Hungarian society. Through its activities, it aims to contribute to solving the challenges facing society, thereby enhancing the prestige of the University of Technology and to the full fulfilment of its educational, research, development and innovation tasks.
